In this project I am investigating the subject of gentrification by studying existing proposals in inner-city areas that are labelled as gentrifying projects. This type of gentrification means that these projects encourage new economic, social and cultural effects on the locality, and displace existing communities by increasing land values and rents to unaffordable levels. The site is located in Spitalfields- area that is classified as gentrifying; My formal approach concerns Bangali culture. For the proposal idea I have chosen to work around the idea of production and retail of textiles. Textiles have been a very present theme throughout the history of Brick Lane since the 17th century, when the French Huguenots- master weavers occupied the area. Later on, the crafting of textiles has been passed to the Jewish occupants, and finally Bangali community, who occupies Brick Lane to this day.
